My 100 Day Journaling Anniversary

As of yesterday it's my 100 day anniversary of my daily journal goal. Through that and the word count goal I started slightly earlier, I have written over 26,000 over the last 4 or so months, much more than I have written before then. Some of that writing has made it here onto this blog, some needs some more marinating time, but overall I think all this writing has helped improve my thinking (and my writing as well) and let me note down a lot more of my thoughts that otherwise would have slipped out of my memory forever.

Through my (I will admit still rather brief) excursion into writing, I haven't really imposed many rules other than the core word count requirement. I tried imposing a 500 word minimum for these blog posts, but that didn't seem to add much and made writing the posts a bit more stressful. Also, imposing complex frameworks and rulesets on top of the basic routine of taking notes may be missing the point, in the sense of mistaking the process for the outcome1.

In other news, I figured out how to use GitHub Actions to run the word count script I had written, meaning that I can now update my Obsidian notes repo from anywhere and get the word count updated automatically. Instructions are in the readme on GitHub.

  1. There's some interesting discussion on this point here.
